Howto: Checkout books at the Alt Library

Alternative Library Book Checkout Instructions
The Alternative Library’s check out/in system is managed by computer software known as Koha. This software allows you to log in to the system from anywhere to search the collection, or log in from Nonstop’s Campus North to check a book out of the physical collection.

Step 1: Log in
Click the Firefox icon to launch the web browser. If you are at Campus North, click the NS Library button at the top of the browser window, or type in the address in the picture below:

192.168.1.42:8080

If you are off-campus, instead type library.nonstopinstitute.org into the address bar. Remember that the on and off campus methods aren’t interchangeable – the on-campus address only works on-campus, and the off-campus address only works off-campus.

The computer will load a web page that says “Koha” and has a login box under it. Type your first name as it appears on your library card, followed by a period, and then, type your last name as it appears on your card.

Example: If I were Horace Mann, I would type horace.mann into the username box.

Horace Mann logs in.

Then, type your password into the password box. If you don’t have a password yet, type in the barcode number that is under the barcode on the back of your library card. Leave out the letters. Just type the number as the password. You can change this password once you log in.

Step 2: Lookup
Once you are logged in, look for this box on the left of the web page.

Click on this box, and make sure the blinking text cursor is there. Then, take the barcode scanner, and scan the barcode label on the back of your library card. The scanner will beep and automatically load a new webpage.

If you don’t have access to the scanner, type in the barcode numbers (not the barcode letters) by hand, and press enter.

Step 3: Check-out
Finally, there will be a web page that says Checking out to (your name). Under it will be a text box.

Checking out!

Click on this box, and make sure the blinking text cursor is there. Then, take the barcode scanner, and scan the barcode label that has the NS logo, which will be on the back or inside cover of the book. (Don’t scan the retail barcode. This will simply cause the library to tell you it can’t find your book). The scanner will beep and automatically load a new webpage.

If you don’t have access to the scanner, type in the barcode numbers (not the barcode letters) by hand, and press enter.

The new webpage should add the book to your checked out books list. If so, you’re done! Enjoy the book!

Step 4: Check-in
Repeat Step 1. Then, instead of entering your name into the Circulation text box, click the link that says Check In. Then, on the next web page, where it says Enter Item Barcode, scan the book’s NS logo barcode with the barcode scanner in the same way that you did to check it out in Step 3. If the scanner beeps and you go to a new web page, you have checked the book in. Thanks for being considerate and returning the book! Hope you enjoyed it and thanks for letting others do the same!
